Why Women's Health?

The role of OT in women's health has been studied since as early as 1992 when the American Journal of Occupational Therapy published Gail Frank’s seminal paper titled “Opening Feminist Histories of Occupational Therapy”. Since then, the field of occupational therapy and women’s health has remained an emerging area of practice. While there has been an increased presence of OTs working specifically within perinatal, postpartum, and  menopause care across the country and around the world, women’s health OT remains underrepresented in our province.

When the concept of New Moon began, we started with a list of service areas we wanted to include that were in line with our combined clinical experience and traditional occupational therapy offerings. But as time went on, we realized that the areas we were most passionate about were closely related to our own firsthand experiences as well as those of our friends and family.

The more people we talked to, the more we learned how many of these experiences are shared by women across the lifespan. Experiences that highlight the gaps in our healthcare system for women and birthing people. New Moon is here to bridge these gaps with evidence-based occupational therapy services that are person-centered, trauma-informed, and holistic in nature.
