Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is a regulated healthcare profession across Canada and around the world. In Nova Scotia, practicing occupational therapists are required to be registered and in good standing with the Nova Scotia Occupational Therapy Regulator (NSOTR) and abide by provincial legislation.

How do occupational therapists work with you?

Occupational therapists can be found anywhere there are goals to be set and barriers to overcome, from mental health to physical health and everywhere in between.

Occupational therapists believe in and promote purposeful and meaningful participation in occupations - the things you do to “occupy” your time! That can include paid work, but it goes far beyond that. Occupations are your hobbies, self-care routines, parenting and caregiving tasks, volunteer work… anything you can imagine.

Occupational therapists do more than provide a list of recommendations. We assess you (the person), the environment (your home, work, social context, etc.), and your occupations (physio exercises, care-giving tasks, self-care routine, leisure activities, etc) to find ways to not only adapt to your situation, but thrive

Each occupational therapy session looks different because they are individualized to the client, but may include a selection of standardized and/or non-standardized assessments. For details regarding how occupational therapy may help you, you can read more about our services here or book a 15 minute free consultation here.

Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) Model*
Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) Model. A Venn diagram showing three overlapping spheres: Person (Values, Interests, Lived Experiences), Environment (Physical, Social, Cultural Contexts), Occupation (Meaningful Activities, Roles, Tasks). In the centre of all three is 'Occupational Performance'. Person and Environment overlap to give 'Supports and Barriers'. Environment and Occupation overlap to give 'Accessibility and Fit'. Occupation and Person overlap to give 'Motivation and Skills'
